What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence is when a man can't achieve or maintain an erection that is sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse.

Occasional failure to achieve an erection is a common phenomenon and does not constitute a medical problem. However if the problem is recurring, it may be erectile dysfunction and you should consult your GP. The risk of ED increases with age.

Physical Causes of ED
· Heart or circulatory problems
· Surgery – many men experience ED after having prostate surgery
· Heavy smoking or excessive drinking
· In some cases diabetes can cause ED
· Side effects of some antidepressant or blood pressure tablets
· Long term illness – liver or kidney disease

Psychological Causes of ED
· Depression or anxiety
· Performance anxiety (worrying about performance during sex)
· Stress
· Relationship problems

What should you do?
You should discuss the situation with your partner or GP if you wish
