The staff and locals of O?Donovan?s Bar, Fisher?s Cross in beautiful Castlefreke (west Cork) must be acknowledged for their generosity and wonderful camaraderie. Each year, O?Donovan?s Bar hosts their renowned Annual New Year?s Day Red Strand Charity Event and this year, the Charity Day (now in its 17th year) was held in aid of The Children?s Leukaemia Unit in the Mercy Hospital as well as Breakthrough Cancer Research. The locals there organised a What’s Your Sport night as well as The Big Shave Off and raised a whopping ?5159.17 for the Children’s Leukaemia Unit at The Mercy Hospital. This is a special cause for the locals as a young boy from the community, Sam, is currently a patient at the unit.
We were invited to the cheque presentation recently and were fortunate enough to experience the warm hospitality and kindness of the people there. On the night, we met with Sam’s grandparents, Lil and Dennis, who told us all about Sam and his family and the care he receives both in the hospital and through the Paediatric Oncology Outreach Nurse Service (POONS).
POONS is a vital service that supports two nurses who travel to the homes of children with cancer in order to administer their treatment. This service reduces the length of time and stress that the child and their parents spend travelling to and from the Mercy Hospital. We were honoured to be part of the Annual New Year?s Day Charity event and would like to say a big thank you to the staff and locals of O?Donovan?s Bar for their generosity.
