Monday, 26th October marks a very important milestone for one of our amazing fundraisers, Brenda Doody. She will take part in the Dublin Marathon – the final in her Mercy Marathon Challenge. Brenda embarked on a challenge to run 12 marathons in 8 months (beginning with Tralee Marathon in March and ending with the marathon in Dublin) to raise funds and awareness for a cancer that shook her family to the core.
In May 2014, Brenda’s husband, Pat (aged 44 at the time) was diagnosed out of the blue with oesophageal cancer. Following chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Pat underwent surgery to have his oesophagus removed. Pat is recovering well and their young family is beginning to experience normality again following the terrible ordeal.
At the beginning of 2015, Brenda got in touch with us and told us of her plan. So far, she has raised a phenomenal 21,000 euro which will help to fund oesophageal cancer research at the Mercy Hospital and will be spear headed by Consultant Tom Murphy – the man who saved Pat’s life.On top of that, Pat plans to run the last half of the marathon with Brenda ? this will be a huge achievement for Pat who recently returned to work and normal life after his cancer experience. We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Brenda, Pat, their sons, and their community of dedicated supporters who have supported Brenda’s Mercy Marathon Challenge throughout.
Congratulations Brenda, we are so proud of you!
